Working in Canada

What you should know

Canada welcomes hundreds of thousands of immigrants from all over the world every year. Living or studying in this wonderful country also means working there. Canada’s immigration policy is clear: to achieve an employment rate among new residents as high as that of citizens. It is for this reason (which is of course an opportunity for candidates) that the majority of immigration streams take into account federal or provincial labor needs and the level of professional qualification of potential immigrants.

THE ADVANTAGES OF
WORKING IN CANADA

Canada offers many advantages in the labour sector compared to many
developed countries.

The major asset is job security. Indeed, data from recent years show an
employment rate of 85% for men and 80% for women. The unemployment rate
(excluding the Covid crisis) remains one of the lowest in the OECD (6% before
the crisis).

The salary is encouraging in all sectors, and is becoming imposing in some
northern provinces. In 2020, the average salary was estimated at 2,600 euros,
20% or even 30% more than some European countries. Combined with a
reasonable cost of living, it generates exemplary purchasing power: Canada
peaks in 11th position, dominating more than 120 countries in terms of the
purchasing power of its residents.

Who can work in Canada?

Any immigrant can work: students part-time, residents full-time (40 hours per week). Visitors are not
allowed to work under penalty of expulsion. However, there are some basic rules:
  • Have a competent level of French and/or English.
  • Some professions require an exam or internship
  • Some diplomas are subject to evaluation for a diploma recognized in Canada.
  • Some jobs are only open to permanent residents or citizens.
  • All occupations are classified in the NOC (National Occupational Classification system) which
determines which immigration programs are open to them

The NOC

In the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system, jobs are grouped according to:

  • The job functions;
  • The type of work performed by the holder.

It is through this system that Canada manages all jobs in 5 categories for the purposes of temporary or permanent immigration, federal or provincial, to determine if a job or type of work experience meets the eligibility criteria for the targeted program.

The work permit

Unlike a permanent immigration application that requires a job offer (if not a sponsorship), the
work permit provides its holder with temporary residence to perform a specific job (duration,
employer and location listed in the permit) or an open job. In many cases, the time and
qualifications of work can be counted towards a future application for permanent residence.

The permit generally expires at the end of the employment contract, but can be renewed or
extended. The work permit is obtained more easily and quickly than an immigration visa. It is
possible, among other things, for students, free trade, international transfers and seasonal work.
